City Treasurer’s Office - Volunteer Intern

Overview of Organization:

The Treasurer of the City of Chicago serves as the City's Investor, Banker, and Advocate. The City Treasurer's Office (CTO) is organized into six teams, each responsible for specific roles: Investments (Investor), Accounting (Banker), Communications (Advocate), Community Engagement (Advocate), Equity Diversity, & Inclusion (Advocate), and Intergovernmental Affairs (Advocate). Interns and Fellows at the CTO work with one of these teams based on their educational background and interests. We seek candidates with a focus on Public Policy, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion, and Finance, who are passionate about urban issues and possess strong writing, research, and communication skills.

Internship Summary:

The City Treasurer's Office offers an exciting internship opportunity for individuals interested in Public Policy, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion, and Finance, with a keen interest in urban challenges. Interns will work closely with experienced staff to design and implement projects aligned with the goals of their respective departments. This role also involves administrative and research duties as needed. Interns will contribute to drafting public policy reports, conducting economic research, performing financial analysis, creating presentations, and assisting with press and social media activities, based on their skills and interests.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with departmental teams to assist in the design and implementation of specific projects outlined in the City Treasurer's Intern Manual.
  • Conduct research on relevant public policy issues, urban challenges, and financial topics.
  • Provide support for financial analysis tasks, including data collection and reporting.
  • Assist in drafting public policy reports and documents for various stakeholders.
  • Presentation Development: Create engaging presentations for internal and external use.
  • Contribute to press releases, social media campaigns, and other communication efforts.
  • Perform administrative tasks as needed to support departmental functions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong writing and research skills, with the ability to analyze data and draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A genuine interest in urban issues and public finance.
  • Self-motivation, adaptability, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

About the Supervisor:

Your internship supervisor will be Monique Cook-Bey.

Location/Modality:

The CTO office is located at 112 N La Salle St., Chicago, IL 60602. Our team works Mon-Friday and some weekends. Our intern would work according to their availability.

Start and End Date:

The Academic Year internships will take place according to the IOP’s timeline, with specific dates and weekly hours to be determined by the employer partner and intern during the interview process:

  • Onboarding: November – December 2024
  • Intern Work Period: January – May 2025
Modality Notes

Our team works in the office Monday-Friday and some weekends. Our Intern will work in office on those days and when remote work is offered that will also be a second option.

Commuting Notes

We are surrounded by public transportation. Most interns took Metra or CTA.
