The Energy and Environment Lab is seeking a summer intern graduating in December 2025 or in 2026. We're reposting this role to emphasize this desired qualification.

Organization Overview:

The University of Chicago Energy and Environment Lab (E&E Lab) is at the forefront of tackling critical environmental and public health challenges in partnership with policy leaders. Our unique approach combines expertise in regulation and social science, using advanced data analytics and administrative datasets to enhance policy effectiveness. Situated at the intersection of academia, policy, and law, we not only identify and rigorously evaluate promising frameworks but also work closely with practitioners to translate evidence into tangible policy change.

Partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) One of our key partners is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, particularly through the Air Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Branch. This branch collaborates with state and tribal regulatory partners to ensure compliance with the Clean Air Act and related regulations. Their efforts encompass enforcement, compliance monitoring, and assistance programs for various stakeholders.

Internship Summary:

The intern will have the unique opportunity to collaborate with EPA staff and E&E Lab researchers in developing and implementing research initiatives that address pressing environmental challenges faced by communities. This position offers a valuable learning experience in environmental policy, equipping the intern with a diverse skill set crucial for policy development and scaling. The intern will apply econometric and machine learning methodologies while coordinating across multiple teams, effectively bridging technical analysis with policy solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with policymakers from both EPA and E&E Lab researchers.
  • Apply methodological knowledge and communication skills to facilitate effective communication between the organizations.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of research projects addressing environmental challenges.
  • Apply econometric and machine learning techniques to analyze environmental data.
  • Assist in translating technical analysis into actionable policy recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in environmental policy and public health.
  • Methodological proficiency in econometrics and/or machine learning.
  • Excellent communication skills to facilitate effective collaboration.
  • Ability to coordinate across multiple teams and organizations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated.

About the Supervisor:

Your supervisor will be Olga Rostapshova, however interns will work closely with EPA staff and E&E Lab researchers, benefiting from a mentorship program that includes regular meetings.

Location, Modality and Commute:

Our offices are located at: 222 S Riverside Plaza, Floor 15, Chicago, IL 60606. This internship is fully in-person.
