Speaker Series Grad Assistant

Overview of the IOP:

The Institute of Politics is a nonpartisan organization that seeks to improve the quality of political discourse and inspire the next generation of public service leaders. In tandem with UChicago’s famed and rigorous core curriculum, it aims to instill a passion for public engagement through public events, internships, Fellows seminars and civic projects.

Internship Summary:

The Institute is seeking to hire a Speaker Series Production Intern to work 15-19 hours per week during the 2024-25 academic year, mostly in the evenings. This position supports the Institute of Politics’ operations by supporting the IOP’s Speaker Series team with on-site event-related responsibilities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating and monitoring event registration pages
  • Assisting with outreach and promotion for Speaker Series events
  • Compiling and managing data to be used in event and program planning and evaluation. Contributes to database improvements by implementing ideas as they are identified, with general direction from others.
  • Coordinating event-day logistics and performing other routine assignments with guidance from others.
  • Provides onsite production help during events – including typically 2 to 4 evenings a week during peak programming months (about six months/year), and, occasionally, during some daytime hours.
  • Assisting with identification and resolution of event and program needs.
  • Support the Speaker Series team with managing process for tracking and maintaining key Speakers Series metrics and audience feedback.
  • Assists with researching creative event & speaker ideas.
  • May create & manage event briefing documents.
  • Assists with management of event calendars (Box outlook & G Cals)
  • May facilitate student sessions with speakers (registration process, selection, and oversight)
  • May assist with coordination of AV needs for Speaker Series events.
  • May greet speakers
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Interest in politics and public service
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong organizational skills, research abilities and resourcefulness
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in the use of Google docs, Google calendar, Dropbox and Excel
  • Ability to work with minimal oversight; self-directed and motivated

Hours and Compensation:

Hours: 15-19 hours per week Compensation: $20/hour

Commuting Notes

Students can typically walk to the IOP from their classes on campus.
