Overview of Organization:
The Chicago Project on Security and Threats (CPOST) is a non-partisan research center at the University of Chicago dedicated to advancing scholarship on international politics, security, and trade that advances peace and prosperity. CPOST brings together leading scholars at the University of Chicago conducting rigorous, data-driven research on issues of national and international importance to provide critical knowledge to policymakers, scholars, and the public. CPOST's research lab model supports faculty research with dedicated teams of graduate and undergraduate research assistants, strengthening world-class education for future professionals. CPOST seeks to produce policy-relevant basic research, with a focus on “black hole” topics on security issues, broadly defined, where credible new knowledge has the potential to improve policy decisions that can strengthen the security of the United States and peoples around the world.
Internship Summary:
Research Supervisors serve both a research and management role. On the research side they are responsible for performing research tasks such as data collection, data processing, data management, and data analysis, as well as helping to write CPOST research products such as reports and presentations. On the management side, they are responsible for training new RAs about how the research process is done, modeling good behavior, and overseeing and evaluating the work of junior RAs. Research Supervisors are required to have 3 quarters of experience working with CPOST. They are required to have good Open-Source Intelligence Skills, good written and critical thinking skills, and to work well as part of a team.
Responsibilities:
- Perform research tasks such as data collection, data processing, data management, and data analysis
- Help write CPOST research products such as reports and presentations
- Train new RAs on how the research process is done, model good behavior, and oversee and evaluate the work of junior RAs
Qualifications:
- 3 quarters of experience working with CPOST
- Open-Source intelligence skills
- Good written and critical thinking skills
- Work well as part of a team
About the Supervisor:
Your supervisor will be Kyle Larson, an alum of The College and master’s program in International Relations.
Location, Modality, and Commute:
The office is located on the University of Chicago campus at 6030 S Ellis, Chicago IL, 60637.
Start and End Date:
Summer internships will take place during the period of June 10 - September 27, with specific dates to be determined by the employer partner and intern during the interview process. The expected schedule will be 9:00am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday for 8 weeks of the summer.
