Overview of Organization: Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country’s single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. LSC currently funds 132 independent nonprofit legal aid organizations with more than 800 offices throughout the nation. LSC’s mission is to promote equal access to justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans. LSC’s Executive Office consists of the President, the Vice President for Grants Management, the Chief of Staff, the Special Assistant to the President, the Board Relations Coordinator, and the Executive Coordinator. The Executive Office oversees the implementation of policies set by LSC’s Board of Directors, and manages the Corporation’s operations, including the planning, development, and implementation of all major LSC initiatives.
Internship Summary/Goals:
- Understand the role of an Executive Office within a nonprofit organization;
- Work independently and collaboratively on projects managed by Executive team members;
- Strengthen attention to detail as well as multi-tasking skills while working on multiple time-sensitive projects;
- Learn how to efficiently plan and provide logistical support for large events; and
- Participate in a broad range of activities and research that give the intern exposure to all offices across LSC.
Requirements:
- Assist with preparation for LSC’s Board of Directors’ quarterly meetings and periodic committee meetings, and related events and forums;
- Conduct internet-based and other research, and analyze LSC data on legal aid (past research projects have included analyzing needs assessments and outcomes data);
- Maintain extensive data files related to grantee data and board meetings;
- Draft and edit correspondence, reports, and other documents; and
- Perform various administrative functions.

About the Supervisor: Karly Satkowiak is Chief of Staff at the Legal Services Corporation, where she started as a Graduate Law Fellow in 2018. Between now and 2018, she took time to work on the advance and operations team of Joe Biden’s 2020 Presidential Campaign and in the Office of the Vice President. She graduated from American University Law School in 2018, and from Central Michigan University in 2009.
Start and End Date: Summer internships will take place during the period of June 10 - September 27 with specific dates to be determined by the employer partner and intern during the interview process.
Our office is hybrid. While our team has different schedules, we would like our intern to join us in office Tuesday-Thursday.
