What Does Freedom Mean to You?

In our public discourse, we hear the word “freedom” frequently but often in strikingly different ways. Voices from opposing sides often hold up the banner of freedom as license to further their cause. As we continue to think about polarization and get to the heart of some of the divisions in our country, we hope you’ll join us for an examination of freedom and its meaning.

The IOP welcomes Former Congressman Justin Amash and former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick for a dialogue on freedom and what the concept means to individuals across the political spectrum.

Amash, a libertarian, is a former member of the House Freedom Caucus and is currently a Pritzker Fellow at the IOP. Patrick, a Democrat, served two terms as Governor of Massachusetts and is a civil rights attorney and a member of the IOP’s Board of Advisors.

  • Justin Amash Spring 2021 Pritzker Fellow, U.S. Representative from Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District (2011-2021); First Libertarian congressperson
  • Deval Patrick First African-American Governor of Massachusetts (2007-2015); Co-Chair of the Future of Tech Commission; Former 2020 Presidential Candidate; Former Staff Attorney at NAACP Legal Defense Fund; Former Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights(1994-1997); Member, The University of Chicago Institute of Politics Board of Advisors
