The North Korean Threat

Less than three decades after the end of the Cold War, the world yet again faces a threat of nuclear conflict. With North Korea’s testing of long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles earlier this year, the United States, South Korea, and Japan would seem to have a greater reason to worry. But what is Pyongyang really capable of? What can we expect from China, DPRK’s main ally? Can a diplomatic route provide a long-term solution, or are international organizations failing to curb nuclear proliferation? Join the IOP as we welcome the following experts to discuss the global response to North Korea: Mark Lippert, former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea (2014-2017) David E. Sanger, the chief Washington correspondent for The New York Times, specializing in nuclear proliferation Dr. Han Sung-Joo, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Korea This conversation will be moderated by Emma Belcher, Director of Nuclear Challenges at the MacArthur Foundation.
