Sexual Assault in the Military: Former Rep. Jackie Speier and Others On This National Scourge

The 2020 murder of Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen, discovered near Fort Hood, where she served, underscored for the nation the horrific prevalence of sexual harassment and assault in the military and inspired a film, “I Am Vanessa Guillen.” Why has the #MeToo movement often failed to consider women in the military? What moves have the Pentagon taken to address this seemingly intractable problem?

In the latest of the IOP’s events designed to bridge the military/civilian divide on campus and beyond, come hear from former Representative Jacqueline Speier, who worked extensively on the issue during her many years in Congress, Josh Connolly, vice chair of the board of Protect Our Defenders and consultant on the documentary, and Dr. Nate Galbreath, Acting Director of the Department of Defense Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office. Moderated by Kaedy Puckett, a fourth-year in the College and U.S. Navy Veteran.
