Please join the Institute of Politics and the University's office of Alumni Relations & Development as we welcome Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY & JD’96) for a conversation with IOP Director & Founder David Axelrod (AB’76) in celebration of the University’s Alumni Weekend.
First elected to Congress in 2016, Rep. Cheney is Wyoming’s only member of the House of Representatives. She serves on the House Armed Services Committee and until recently, was the third most powerful Republican in the House. Last month, in a voice vote behind closed doors, Republican House members voted to remove her from leadership after she spoke out forcefully against former President Trump’s continued claims that he won 2020 presidential election. After the vote, Rep. Cheney vowed to do whatever she can to keep the former president away from the Oval Office. So what does this mean for the future of the Republican Party and Trump’s influence? What does this rift within the party mean to conservatism? And how does the Congresswoman plan to move forward as she faces next year’s midterm election?
Rep. Cheney previously served at the State Department as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Middle East. She also practiced law at White & Case and at the International Finance Corporation. A specialist in national security and foreign policy, she was a Fox News analyst, and the co-author, along with her father Vice President Cheney, of Exceptional: Why The World Needs a Powerful America.
