In light of the unprecedented rise this winter of Mediterranean crossing from North Africa and the Middle East into southern Europe, the upcoming warmer months are expected to bring about a record-breaking number of attempted maritime crossings in one of the world’s busiest and most dangerous migrant routes. This event hopes to take a comprehensive view at this humanitarian crisis: what are the underlying factors in the MENA region that push migrants to attempt this dangerous journey? What is the appropriate European response to this surge? What role could international law and the international community at large play in addressing this trans-national issue? To explore these questions and more, we are joined by an expert panel, including Mr. Suat Kınıklıoğlu, former Turkish Member of Parliament, Mercator Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress and IOP Spring 2015 fellow, and Mr. Vincent Floreani, Consul General of France in Chicago and former Deputy Spokesperson and Deputy Director of Communications and Press at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Lunch will be provided. This event is part of the International Policy Program's Foreign Policy Friday series.
