Last year’s “white paper” protests against the Chinese government’s strict Covid-19 measures, censorship and other authoritarian practices brightened the spotlight on a challenged nation. A demographic collapse spurred by decades of its one-child policy has led to a shrinking labor force and a constricted housing market. Friction with the United States has escalated over Taiwan and TikTok, the Chinese-based app that lawmakers and the Biden administration are seeking to ban. Various other economic and geopolitical issues abound. How do people living and working in China view a complex situation often flattened by American policy makers?
Come hear from experts Dake Kang, a Beijing-based reporter for The Associated Press; Dali L. Yang a political science professor at the University of Chicago; and Deborah Seligsohn, an assistant professor and China expert at the Villanova College of Arts and Sciences in a conversation moderated by Susan Jakes, Editor-in-Chief of ChinaFile and a Senior Fellow at Asia Society's Center for China Analysis.
