America's Pivot: Afghanistan to East Asia

The Institute of Politics welcomes David Sanger, White House and national security correspondent for the New York Times, and current IOP Pritzker fellow Lotfullah Najafizada, Afghan journalist and director of TOLONews, Afghanistan’s first 24-hour news and current affairs television channel.

These two preeminent journalists will unpack the story of Afghanistan since 9/11 until present day. How did the birth and rise of free press in Afghanistan develop since 9/11? How will the Taliban’s control of the country now affect the dissemination of news in Afghanistan today? How did the Afghan army fail to fend off the Taliban recapture of Afghanistan in less than 100 days earlier this year? Since the U.S. has withdrawn from Afghanistan, there are increasing signs of international terrorist groups growing in strength in Afghanistan. Will the Taliban and the United States be able to coordinate and work to stem international terrorism efforts in Afghanistan?

  • Lotfullah Najafizada Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 Pritzker Fellow, Afghan journalist and director of TOLONews, chief executive of Amu TV
