Since he was sworn into office in January, President Trump has taken swift and extraordinary measures to realize his campaign promises targeting illegal immigrants and asylum seekers. Chicago, a sanctuary city, has long been at the center of Trump’s hostility; Mayor Johnson recently testified before Congress about the city’s immigration policy. Is the Trump administration protecting American workers as promised? What is Chicago’s plan for protecting its legal residents? This panel discussion, co-moderated by students from IOP’s event committees Chicago Style and the International Policy Program, will seek to separate the misinformation from reality surrounding ICE raids, student deportations, work visas, and more, all with Chicago at the forefront. Featuring Ronald Vitiello, Senior Advisor to the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Beatriz Ponce de León Chicago Deputy Mayor of Immigrant, Migrant and Refugee Rights and Muzaffar Chishti, Esq., Senior Fellow at the Migration Policy Institute. Moderated by Doan Tran, AB ‘27 and Ammar Ghouse, AB ‘27. If you have any questions about accessibility, please contact iopevents@uchicago.edu.
