IOP Pritzker Fellow Vanita Gupta on "Navigating Justice in Contemporary Washington" THIS SEMINAR IS OPEN TO CURRENT UCHICAGO STUDENTS ONLY Monday, April 29 3:30-4:45pm Gupta’s Senate confirmation was contentious, reflecting increased polarization in Washington D.C. and beyond. Some attempted to paint her career of civil rights advocacy as partisan, even though she enjoyed strong support from law enforcement groups (including the nation’s largest police union) and led bipartisan coalitions advancing criminal justice reform. How can society make space for complex policies and pursuits, like combating violent crime and gun violence, while also supporting constitutional policing and victims of crime? How can we support due process, as well as justice, for criminal and civil enforcement efforts that ensure equal justice and protect equal opportunity for all in the current climate? How did the democracy space – including voting rights – become the subject of controversy? And what strategies remain to navigate justice in polarized times? Pritzker Fellows seminars are off the record and open to current UChicago students only. Seating in the IOP Living Room is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have any questions about accessibility, please contact Sarah Palmisciano (spalmisciano@uchicago.edu).
