The field of international policy bridges a variety of interests and industries, connecting defense contractors and diplomats as well as activists and non-government organizations under a common goal of uniting the globe economically and politically. However, careers in international policy vary in terms of the types of policy issues they tackle, day-to-day responsibilities, and macro-level policy goals. How might a defense contractor’s professional priorities and tasks differ from that of a diplomat? What skills and backgrounds prepare students for a career in the defense industry or as a diplomat? What commonalities exist across international policy careers? To provide students with a perspective on careers in international policy as well as advice on how they can break into and succeed in this field, Emily Boening and Grey Moszkowski join the student-led International Policy Program. Emily Boening is a Special Assistant in the Office of the Deputy Secretary of State, and is a specialist on Russia, Europe, the Arctic Circle, and arms control. Boening has also worked on some of the United States’ most pressing issues in her career including Afghanistan, Syria, and counterterrorism. Grey Moszkowski is a contract specialist at F-35 JPO negotiating and finalizing contracts to acquire and sustain the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter for U.S. military forces and allied nations. A recent University of Chicago alum, Moszkowski’s past experience includes working as a Truth and Accountability Project Intern at Public Interest Advocacy Centre in Australia, Research Assistant at CPOST researching patterns of violence at protests in U.S. cities, and Legislative and Constituent Services Intern in the office of U.S. Representative Robin Kelly.
