Organization Overview:
The 5th Ward is represented by Alderman Desmon Yancy, who has spent the last 15 years working in community organizing and advocacy, building coalitions, and pushing for policy changes that will improve the quality of life for marginalized people. He is a champion for affordable housing, public safety reform and raising the minimum wage for workers and their families.

Internship Summary:
As a Communications and Constituent Services Intern Intern, you will be involved in our office's day-to-day operations. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in various aspects of local government, from conducting research and policy analysis to providing essential constituent services. You will be an integral part of our team, contributing to the betterment of our district.

- Create e-blasts, newsletters and social media posts geared to inform ward constituents
- Research talking points for Alderman’s speeches
- Attend meetings/events including Chicago City Council Meetings and/or community events.
- Assist chief of staff with ideas for events and coordinating with vendors
- Address constituent walk-ins, calls and emails; including requests for permits front desk, meeting requests and other forms to give to constituents
- Manage the office’s reception area, greeting visitors interested in scheduling a meeting or waiting for their meeting.
- Enter data from large events from sign in sheets into Excel

Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong interest in local government, community development, and public policy.
- Willingness to learn
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Empathetic and customer-oriented approach to constituent services.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

About the Supervisor:
Your internship supervisor will be Reneemarie Smith.

Location and Modality:
This internship is mostly in person. The office is located at 2230 E 71st Street, Chicago IL, 60649.

Start and End Date:
The internship will be from June 10 to September 27, with the flexibility to accommodate specific scheduling needs.
