Overview of Organization: The Greater Chatham Initiative (GCI) is a catalyst for economic development across Greater Chatham, including Chatham, Auburn Gresham, Avalon Park, and Greater Grand Crossing. GCI leads place-based strategies that drive commercial growth, cultural tourism, and small business development. In 2026, GCI is advancing the 79th Street Corridor Development Strategy in partnership with the Department of Planning and Development through the Commercial Corridor Storefront Activation Program. This initiative focuses on activating vacant storefronts, strengthening small businesses, enhancing the public realm, and positioning 79th Street as a vibrant cultural and commercial destination anchored by Mahalia’s Mile.

Internship Summary: This is not a passive internship. This role sits inside a live economic development project backed by the City of Chicago. As a Summer Intern, 79th Street Economic Development & Corridor Activation, you will support the execution of a multi-block corridor activation strategy. The work includes storefront activation, cultural programming, business engagement, and data-driven planning tied directly to funded outcomes. You will work closely with GCI leadership to support real-time implementation of corridor improvements, business support strategies, and public-facing experiences that drive foot traffic, revenue, and long-term investment along 79th Street.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on high-performing commercial corridors in Chicago and nationally, with a focus on storefront activation, placemaking, and small business growth.
  • Support data collection, business outreach, and corridor analysis to inform activation strategies and reporting tied to DPD requirements.
  • Assist with the coordination and execution of corridor activations, including: Mahalia Jackson Court programming and public events; Artists on the 9 exhibitions and creative installations; 79th Street boardwalk and public realm activations; Event stage programming and vendor coordination; Contribute to storefront activation efforts, including tracking vacant spaces, supporting pop-ups, and assisting with tenant engagement; Support the planning and coordination of cultural tourism experiences, including trolley tours and corridor-based programming; Assist in documenting impact metrics, including foot traffic, business participation, and event performance
  • Provide general project support across GCI’s economic development and corridor initiatives

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in urban planning, economic development, real estate, or community development
  • Strong research, writing, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, community-based environment
  • Interest in cultural programming, small business development, and neighborhood revitalization
  • Self-starter with strong attention to detail and accountability

Location/Modality/Commute: Monday - Friday: 9 AM - 5 PM in the office

Start/End Date: Summer internships will take place during the period of June 1 to September 25, 2026, with specific dates to be determined by the employer partner and intern during the interview process.
