Overview of Organization: The Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center (AALAC) promotes dynamic geopolitical partnerships with Latin American and Caribbean states and helps redirect US and European policy priorities toward strengthening security and bolstering economic growth and prosperity on the continent.

Internship Summary: Interns are an integral part of the Center’s work. Interns work closely with AALAC staff to provide important research and logistical support to the Center. They are also encouraged to participate in and attend events hosted by other programs at the Atlantic Council. We have an all-hands-on-deck approach that requires our interns to actively engage with our events, meetings, communications, publications, and strategies. As a result, this position exposes interns to various writing and publishing procedures, the logistical elements of event planning, and the process of creating strategic initiatives within a think tank.

With a work culture of continual learning, an inclination toward deadlines and a demonstrated passion and interest for economic and political prosperity through class work and/or experience is strongly preferred. Demonstrated interest in international affairs, specifically Latin American and Caribbean affairs, through classwork and/or experience is preferred. Applications reflecting strong writing and editing skills, as well as Spanish or Portuguese speaking skills, will be prioritized for consideration.

This internship is based in our Washington, DC headquarters, requiring a minimum of four days per week in office. Undergraduate students able to work up to 40 hours per week are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:

  • Support coordination and execution of logistical elements for AALAC events.
  • Contribute to a range of ongoing projects, including research and the planning and execution of meetings, drafting memos, fulfilling administrative tasks, and other activities as needed.
  • Participate in regular AALAC meetings and monthly Atlantic Council meetings.
  • Draft formal correspondence to government officials and invitations for events.
  • Take notes at Council roundtables and strategy sessions for program archives.
  • Assist the Center in promoting publications, events, and press mentions.
  • Assist the team with special projects, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Must be at least a college junior in good standing preferably majoring in international affairs/relations, regional studies, economics, or a related field.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written – live and virtual), including the ability to identify and work through challenges, underscored by strong judgment and emotional intelligence.
  • Strong writing and editing skills while drafting business letters, proposals, and short articles.
  • Experience with social media campaigns, databases, and/or events management is desired.
  • Strong analytical, planning, time management, and organizational skills are critical for success.
  • Ability to anticipate needs, follow up on requests, and maintain a sense of organizational priorities strongly encouraged.
  • Poise and professionalism in a team environment across hierarchies with colleagues and counterparts in the United States and abroad.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite is required.
  • Aptitude and strong skills in research and writing are required.
  • Spanish or Portuguese fluency preferred.

About the Supervisor: Valeria Villarreal is an assistant director at the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center, where she contributes to the center’s work on Mexico and business development. Throughout her time at the Council, she has supported multiple projects, including the development of a dashboard detailing crucial information about the Summit of the Americas process. Villarreal also supports the center’s work aimed at strengthening economic security and competitiveness as tenets of the US-Mexico relationship. Prior to her time at the Atlantic Council, Villarreal was a research assistant and events manager at Georgetown University’s Center for Latin American Studies, where she engaged in an independent research project to analyze the social and political impacts of COVID-19 in Mexico and Latin America. Villarreal was also an intern at McLarty Associates’ Mexico Practice and the Political Affairs Section at the Mexican embassy in Washington, DC, where she focused on highlighting Mexico’s commercial and political relevance globally. Originally from Monterrey, Mexico, Villarreal holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from the Georgetown University Walsh School of Foreign Service, where she majored in international politics and minored in diplomatic studies.

Location/Modality/Commute: Our office works in person 4 days a week, usually making Friday remote. This may vary. We would like the intern to come in 4 days a week.

Start/End Date: Summer internships will take place during the period of June 1 to September 25, 2026, with specific dates to be determined by the employer partner and intern during the interview process.
