Last summer, Japan’s dominant Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) was shaken by a series of electoral defeats and a scandal that forced the Japanese prime minister to resign. Amidst the chaos emerged Sanae Takaichi, a veteran conservative lawmaker securing a landslide victory to become Japan’s first female Prime Minister. In a time of uncertainty, she revived a party many thought was fading. A heavy metal drummer, Karate black belt, and former TV host, Takaichi is a striking departure from traditional Japanese patriarchal ways. Yet, she remains bold and unapologetically hard-line, championing aggressive economic growth, a firm stance toward China, and strict immigration controls. Is Takaichi’s election a revolutionary break from precedent, or a strategic return to the LDP status quo? Could she mark the emergence of a new Japanese cultural movement, or its long-awaited climax?
