IOP Pritzker Fellow Lisa Franchetti on "Taking on China in South America: Living on 'Soft Power'" THIS SEMINAR IS OPEN TO CURRENT UCHICAGO STUDENTS ONLY Tuesday, March 24 3:30-4:45pm After the end of the Cold War, and then later after 9/11, U.S. military operations around South America generally decreased, with the region being considered a lower priority until very recently. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s. Over those decades, South America has become a key prize in great power competition with China: resources like copper, markets, telecom networks and even telescopes were on the PRC’s “to do” list. How could the U.S. compete, and how does the U.S. military enable that competition? How are we doing? How is this dynamic changing with the 2025 National Security Strategy’s re-orientation toward the Western Hemisphere? Pritzker Fellows seminars are off the record and open to current UChicago students only. Seating in the IOP Living Room is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have any questions about accessibility, please contact Ella Kumano-Maloney (ikmaloney@uchicago.edu).
