Student Event Committees

A continuing highlight of the Speaker Series are the three student-led programs: the Chicago Style, International Policy Program, and News & Views. Each program is run by a committee of students, who identify topics, book guests, and moderate the discussions for these events.

Chicago Style

Chicago Style is a student-led event series that delves deeply into the big issues of Chicago and Illinois politics. Past speakers have included prominent local elected officials, policymakers, political operatives, journalists, and community organizers. In the 2015/16 year, the series produced eight events with prominent Chicago and Illinois leaders and politicians, from the Illinois State Treasurer to non-profit innovators in the South Side of Chicago. The committee also organized a site visit to learn about low income housing with the Chicago Housing Authority.

Members of this committee will work closely with IOP staff and its Student Advisory Board to learn the skills needed for successful event production. This committee is responsible for:

• Researching and selecting event topics
• Researching potential speakers
• Crafting invitations for speakers
• Securing event space
• Ordering catering for attendees
• Marketing the event
• Managing event set-up and attendee check-in
