  • IOP Political Exploration Trek to Jakarta, Indonesia (June 11 – 17, 2017) | Join the IOP and fellow students from Harvard and Georgetown as you travel together to Jakarta, Indonesia for a cross-cultural exploration of global urban development challenges in the 21st century. Five (5) students from the University of Chicago will be selected to participate in this immersive leadership experience which is led by the UK-based international organization Common Purpose in collaboration with BINUS University in Jakarta. The cost of the trip is $500 per person, though financial assistance is available for qualified students.

You will need to upload a resume and separate PDF document answering five questions that are listed in the instructions. Students will be evaluated through the quality of their applications as well as in person interviews.

  • IOP International Policy Program Committee | The International Policy Program (IPP) aims to highlight current events in global affairs. This series gives students the opportunity to invite experts in the Chicago area to discuss current hot-button topics around the world. In the 2016/17 year, the committee hosted events on topics ranging from female representation around the world, US-Russia relations, and the future of Europe. The committee also organizes a career mentorship series that focuses on international relations and public service. 

    Members of this committee will work closely with IOP staff and its Student Advisory Board to learn the skills needed for successful event production. The committee is responsible for: 1) Researching and selecting event topics; 2) researching potential speakers; 3) crafting invitations for speakers; 4) securing event space; 5) ordering catering for attendees; 6) marketing the event; and 7) managing event set-up and attendee check-in.

  • 2017 David Axelrod Reporting Grant | The David Axelrod Reporting Grant, established in 2015, is sponsored by the University of Chicago Institute of Politics (IOP). As the founder and director of the IOP, author of a best-selling memoir, host of the critically-acclaimed podcast "The Axe Files," and a former political reporter and City Hall bureau chief for the Chicago Tribune, David Axelrod is committed to elevating the quality of journalism on this campus and beyond. The Gate is looking for ambitious, well-researched, and feasible project ideas that shed light on a current issue from a unique perspective. The grant may be applied to travel expenses or other resources needed to execute the project. The winner of this grant will receive funding to pursue an original, long-form reporting project over the summer of 2017. 

    Please use the form below to apply. You will need to include a one-page project proposal and a writing sample. The writer will coordinate with Gate staff throughout the summer with the intention of publishing the piece by October 1, 2017.
