All undergraduates spending their summer quarter in Washington D.C. have access to special “Summer in Washington” programming. For 10 weeks, from July through mid-September, the Institute will hold a series of events in the city to help highlight the range of careers available in public service, give students a chance to interact with and challenge political practitioners, meet UChicago alumni and socialize with each other. Email Summer in Washington coordinator Maira Khwaja to join the program's mailing list.
Not only are our students in D.C. learning in their own respective internships, but they are participating in our programming. Organized by our Summer in Washington Program Coordinator Maira Khwaja, a rising second year in the College, the events include:
- Career Conversations, off-the-record chats with leaders in various political fields
- Women in Leadership Conversations, which address career development and advice for women in public service
- Mentorship Dinner Program, in which students sign up for thematic group discussion groups (such as Federal Agencies & Nonprofits, Communications and Electoral Politics; and National Security & Intelligence) led primarily by UChicago alumni
- Workplace Tours, in which students visit sites such as Google's D.C. office and the Huffington Post.
Summer in Washington Kickoff Party
Along with the UChicago Alumni Club of Washington D.C., the Institute of Politics co-hosted an event on June 26 at the UChicago Office of Federal Relations to mark the start of the Summer in Washington program. At the rooftop reception with views of the Capitol, Institute Director David Axelrod and IOP staff welcomed the students to D.C. Under cloudy—then rainy—skies, interns mingled with UChicago alumni, past IOP Fellows Chris Lu and Steve LaTourette and other guests. See photos from the event »
As part of our program, the Institute will also check in with some of our students in D.C. from time to time to hear their take on their summer internships. See below for the videos and reflections.
